# What does a high Hemoglobin mean?

> A high hemoglobin most often reflects dehydration, smoking, living at altitude, or sleep apnea and other causes of low oxygen; testosterone therapy is a common cause in men receiving it. Persistently high values without those explanations raise the question of polycythemia vera, a bone-marrow disorder, checked with an EPO level and JAK2 gene test.
