# What does a low HDL Cholesterol mean?

> Low HDL cholesterol (below 40 mg/dL in men, 50 in women) is a marker of cardiovascular risk that typically travels with insulin resistance — excess weight, high triglycerides, high blood sugar, inactivity and smoking. Some medications (beta-blockers, anabolic steroids, progestins) and genetic variants lower it. Raising HDL with drugs hasn't reduced heart attacks; the approach is to treat the metabolic pattern and lower LDL and ApoB.

## What is the normal range for HDL Cholesterol?

- Male, age 18+: 40.0 – 100 mg/dL
- Female, age 18+: 50.0 – 100 mg/dL

Low HDL is associated with higher cardiovascular risk. Exercise, dietary fat quality, and smoking all influence HDL.

## What are the common causes of low HDL Cholesterol?

1. Insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes
2. Excess weight, physical inactivity, smoking
3. High triglycerides
4. Medications: beta-blockers, anabolic steroids, progestins, some retinoids
5. Genetic variants

## What symptoms go with low HDL Cholesterol?

- None

## What do clinicians usually check next?

- Triglycerides, A1c and fasting insulin for the metabolic picture
- ApoB and LDL — the modifiable targets
- Exercise, weight and smoking review

## How do you recheck HDL Cholesterol?

## Common questions

### How can I raise my HDL?

Aerobic exercise, weight loss, quitting smoking and replacing refined carbohydrate raise it modestly. No medication that raises HDL has been shown to lower heart-attack risk, so the focus stays on LDL and ApoB.
