# Haptoglobin

> Haptoglobin is measured with a standard blood draw; no fasting is needed. A typical reference range is 30.0 – 200 mg/dL. At TestWell it's $101.99 all-in as Haptoglobin, results in 2–4 business days, drawn at Quest or Labcorp. An out-of-range result is a prompt to look closer, not a diagnosis.

Also known as: haptoglobin.

## What does Haptoglobin measure?

A protein that binds free hemoglobin from broken-down red cells. Drops when red cells are being destroyed faster than normal.

## What is the normal range for Haptoglobin?

| Population | Reference range |
| --- | --- |
| age 18+ | 30.0 – 200 mg/dL |

Reference intervals differ slightly between labs; the range printed on your report is the one to interpret against. Ranges are usually set so 95% of healthy people fall inside them.

## What does a high Haptoglobin mean?

Can reflect inflammation or infection (haptoglobin is also an acute-phase reactant).

## What does a low Haptoglobin mean?

Often reflects hemolytic anemia (red cell destruction).
