# What does a high Folate mean?

> A high folate level almost always reflects supplements or fortified foods and is not harmful in itself. The one caution: high folate intake can mask the anemia of an undiagnosed vitamin B12 deficiency while nerve damage continues, so a high folate with tingling, memory change or a high MCV should prompt a B12 check. Rarely, very high folate accompanies B12 deficiency itself (folate can't be used without B12).

## What is the normal range for Folate?

- age 18+: 3.40 – 25.0 ng/mL

## What are the common causes of high Folate?

1. Folic acid supplements, prenatal vitamins, fortified cereals
2. Vitamin B12 deficiency (unused folate accumulates)
3. Some intestinal bacterial overgrowth

## What symptoms go with high Folate?

- None from folate

## What do clinicians usually check next?

- Vitamin B12 and methylmalonic acid if symptoms or a high MCV are present
- Supplement review

Follow-up tests at TestWell: [Vitamin B12](https://www.test-well.com/tests/vitamin-b12) ($25.99), [Methylmalonic Acid (MMA)](https://www.test-well.com/tests/methylmalonic-acid) ($49.99).

## How do you recheck Folate?

| Test or panel | Type | Price | Fasting | Results |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Vitamin B12 & Folate](https://www.test-well.com/tests/vitamin-b12-and-folate) | Test | $36.99 | No | 2–4 business days |

Plus one $6 lab processing fee per order; physician authorization included.

## Common questions

### Is too much folic acid dangerous?

Excess is excreted and the level itself isn't harmful. The concern is masking B12 deficiency, so a B12 test is the sensible companion.
