# What does a low Estradiol mean?

> Low estradiol is expected after menopause and early in the menstrual cycle, so context decides its meaning. In a woman of reproductive age with missed periods it points to ovarian insufficiency, low body weight or over-exercise, high prolactin, or a pituitary problem. In men, low estradiol on testosterone-lowering therapy or aromatase inhibitors contributes to bone loss and joint pain.

## What is the normal range for Estradiol?

- Male, age 18+: 10.0 – 40.0 pg/mL
- Female, age 18+, varies by cycle phase: 15.0 – 350 pg/mL

## What are the common causes of low Estradiol?

1. Menopause or perimenopause
2. Normal early follicular phase (cycle days 2–5)
3. Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea: low body weight, eating disorders, heavy exercise, stress
4. Primary ovarian insufficiency, Turner syndrome
5. High prolactin, pituitary disorders
6. Men: aromatase inhibitors, hypogonadism

## What symptoms go with low Estradiol?

- Hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness
- Irregular or absent periods
- Low mood, poor sleep, joint aches
- Bone loss over time

## What do clinicians usually check next?

- FSH and LH — high FSH points to the ovaries; low or normal points upstream
- Prolactin and TSH
- Pregnancy test in anyone who could be pregnant
- Bone density assessment if low estradiol is prolonged

## Common questions

### Does low estradiol confirm menopause?

A low estradiol with a high FSH in a woman of the right age, with 12 months without periods, fits menopause. Levels swing during perimenopause, so a single value isn't definitive.
