# What does a low EPA mean?

> Low EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) in the blood means little recent intake of oily fish or EPA-containing supplements. EPA is the omega-3 with the strongest cardiovascular trial evidence (high-dose purified EPA lowered events in people with high triglycerides). It is read with DHA and the Omega-3 Index, which summarize membrane status better than either single fatty acid.

## What is the normal range for EPA?

- age 18+: 14.0 – 100 mcg/mL

## What are the common causes of low EPA?

1. Low intake of oily fish
2. No EPA/DHA supplements (plant ALA converts poorly)
3. High omega-6 intake

## What symptoms go with low EPA?

- None

## What do clinicians usually check next?

- Omega-3 Index for the three-month picture
- Dietary fish or EPA/DHA supplementation; retest in 4 months
- Triglycerides — if high with cardiovascular risk, prescription EPA is a clinician discussion

## How do you recheck EPA?

Plus one $6 lab processing fee per order; physician authorization included.

## Common questions

### EPA or DHA — which matters more?

EPA has the stronger evidence for cardiovascular events; DHA is more important for brain and eye tissue. Most people are low in both and fish or combined supplements raise both.
