# What does a low Creatinine mean?

> A low creatinine usually reflects low muscle mass — older age, small frame, prolonged illness or malnutrition — and occasionally pregnancy (higher filtration), liver disease or a very low-protein diet. It is rarely a kidney problem in itself; it does make creatinine-based eGFR overestimate kidney function, which is where cystatin C helps.
