# What does a low Chloride mean?

> Low chloride most often accompanies low sodium (overhydration, diuretics, SIADH, heart failure) or a high bicarbonate (vomiting, loop diuretics, low potassium, Cushing's). Chronic lung disease with CO2 retention also lowers it as the body compensates. Read with sodium, CO2 and the clinical story.
