# What does a high Chloride mean?

> High chloride usually travels with high sodium (dehydration) or with a low bicarbonate (metabolic acidosis from diarrhea, kidney disease or certain medications). Large saline infusions, some diuretics and hyperparathyroidism raise it too. On its own it is rarely the headline — it is interpreted with sodium, CO2 and kidney function.
