# What does a high AST mean?

> AST rises with liver injury but also with muscle injury, heart muscle damage and hemolysis, so it's read alongside ALT and CK. AST higher than ALT (a ratio above 2) suggests alcohol-related liver disease or advanced scarring; ALT higher than AST is the usual fatty-liver pattern. Recent hard exercise is a common benign cause.

## Common questions

### My AST is high but ALT is normal. What does that mean?

The source may not be the liver — muscle (exercise, injury, statins) or red-cell breakdown are common. A CK and a repeat after rest usually sort it out.
