# What does a low AMH mean?

> Low AMH indicates a smaller ovarian reserve — fewer eggs remaining — which is normal in the late 30s and 40s and expected near menopause, but worth discussing earlier. It predicts response to fertility treatment better than it predicts natural conception: many women with low AMH conceive naturally. Hormonal contraception lowers AMH by up to about 30% while in use.

## What is the normal range for AMH?

- Female, age 18–35: 1.00 – 6.80 ng/mL
- Female, age 36–45: 0.300 – 4.00 ng/mL
- Female, age 46+: 0.000 – 1.50 ng/mL

Often reflects diminished ovarian reserve or approaching menopause.

## What are the common causes of low AMH?

1. Age-related decline (normal from the mid-30s)
2. Hormonal contraception (temporary reduction)
3. Primary ovarian insufficiency, Turner syndrome, chemotherapy or ovarian surgery
4. Endometriosis surgery, autoimmune oophoritis
5. Smoking

## What symptoms go with low AMH?

- Often none
- Shorter or irregular cycles, hot flashes as reserve becomes very low

## What do clinicians usually check next?

- FSH and estradiol on cycle days 2–5
- Antral follicle count by ultrasound
- A reproductive endocrinology visit if conception is planned, especially under 35 with a low value
- Repeat off contraception if it was taken at the time

Plus one $6 lab processing fee per order; physician authorization included.

## Common questions

### Can low AMH be improved?

The egg count itself doesn't regenerate; AMH can rise modestly after stopping hormonal contraception or vitamin D repletion in deficient women. The useful response is planning — timing, and fertility options if wanted.
